does one gain xp from the number of pupils/?? or just when he receives a pupil that gets him xp everytime he levels?

You only gain XP from a pupil given by an IP not used on the site before.

If you get an XP pupil, you get 1 XP every time they level up.

A non-XP pupil is always non-XP ... no matter how high they go, or how many you have.

This is probably in the FAQ or a guide somewhere but I had time to kill so what the hell ... Razz
