I have broadband and my IP is static.

What types of Internet connections have a dynamic IP address?

For ADSL and Cable it can be either Dynamic or Static, It depends on the plan you choose and the ISP.
For Dial up, I can't quite remember but I'm pretty sure its dynamic.

Its really ISP dependent, you should just read up on an ISP, and see what type it is.

Even then, you have to be careful.

Many ISP's say they are dynamic .... and they are ..... but they are sticky dynamic.

As in, your IP address is tied to the MAC address of whatever it's connected to at your end. You can force a change, but it involves MAC spoofing rather than simply resetting the router.

eg. o2 in the UK. They advertise as dynamic, but it's sticky.

http://forum.o2.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=2809

http://broadband.o2.co.uk/home/packages.jsp

Notice on the package it says the static IP is "optional" on the basic package. Thats what I took out ... and I didn't get the optional static IP ..... but I got a sticky dynamic one which is almost as static as a true static. Without MAC spoofing, the only way my IP would change would be to switch my router off for about a week so the lease on the IP expired.

As I found out when I signed up with them! And then cancelled immediately!

There is no simple answer. As Neutrino says, it's totally ISP dependant .... and even then, not always clear cut.

(For instance, your current connection is probably not "static" but actually "sticky" - the same as o2 - if you change the MAC address of your router/modem, the IP will most likely change. Very few people have a genuinely static IP address.)

Quesiton, maybe u guys can help me out:
So I went ahead and got a new ISP to www.clear.com
Its dynamic IP, but upon speaking with them, they
said in order to reset the IP I would have to restart
my computer. I know there's and easier way, but
which method would be best???

The modem is a Motorola CPEi 150 Series
Something "new" called WiMAX, all wireless.

Try figuring out maybe with telnet how to only reset the internet part of the modem.

Does it change if you switch only the modem off?

Do you connect the modem to a router? (and then onto your PC)

It may be that you simply need to connect through a router so that you can reset the router rather than the PC .....

^^Its connected directly to my pc.
I imagine, it will change if the modem
was turned off, but that takes too long.
Just about as long as restarting the pc takes.

Well by restiing the PC then, all you are doing is breaking the connection.

Which suggests that the IP lease time is zero.

In which case, putting a router in the way and resetting the router should have the same effect. So you just need a router you can easily force a reset on (and one that does it quickly would be good! .... can't help you there I'm afraid .... mine is slow as hell!).

Or, as Maccaz suggests, see if you can Telnet into the modem and reset it with that. And I'm afraid Telnet is not something I'm very familiar with either!

Can't say I'm familiar with this type of setup/modem .... when you say "all wireless" .... is the connection to the ISP wireless (ie. no phone-line involved) or the connection to the PC? (ie. do you connect to the modem itself with a cable).

Do you know how easily (or not) you can introduce a router?

^^Theres no phone line involved,
just ethernet to connect to the pc.
Im pretty sure I can add a router,
but that would be another expense.

For a free game, it sure as hell expensive. lol!

If it's ethernet to the PC then a router is your best option by the sound of it.

You say the modem reboot time is slow .... in which case you should aim to get a router with a faster reset time than the modem. Ideally one that is easy to set up a fast command line reconnect file for.

It's that or figure out how to remotely reboot the router ..... but then you are stuck with it's slow reboot time.

I know what you mean about the expense for a free game. My second line is used solely for bruting ... lol

Turn the modem into some sort of access point.

Don't think you can do it to be honest ....

some modems have a tool to help configuring it...
bridge is like when you need to dialup the connection... but i think its just possible with ADSL...
i think Bob is right... maybe thats not possible in your case!
